Your Mohs Surgeon in Lakeland, FL

Mohs surgery is a surgical technique for removing skin cancer. It is considered the most effective method to remove skin cancer with the fewest recurrences. It has the highest cure rate and is considered the “Gold Standard” for the treatment of skin cancer. Mohs is primarily used for basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma. This technique was developed in the 1950’s. To fulfil the criteria for mohs surgery, the physician must serve two roles: the surgeon who removes the tissue and the dermatopathologist who analyzes the lab specimen.

There are two training routes to becoming a mohs surgeon: the American College of Mohs Surgery and the American Society for Mohs Surgery. Although mohs surgery has been around for decades, it was not until October 2018 that the American Board of Medical Specialties approved the subspeciality of Micrographic Dermatologic Surgery (MDS). Prior to this, no mohs surgeon was board-certified (MDS). The first administration of this board exam was October 2021.

David Yrastorza, MD successfully passed this exam and is board-certified in Micrographic Dermatologic Surgery, MDS.
