SK (Seborrheic Keratosis) Treatment

Seborrheic Keratosis are benign growths that are almost universally common to both men and women. Why do we get them? Two main reasons are genes and birthdays. If you parents had many of these lesions, you are more likely to inherit that trait, but almost all of us get some. They tend to increase as we age.

What to watch out for includes: suspicious change. Rapid growth, color change, if the lesion was flat and it raised up or if you have one that looks different than all the others. Some could mimic a melanoma. If they are suspicious, a biopsy may be indicated.

How do I get rid of them?
First off, a clear understanding of the process is important. Anytime you remove anything such as a mole, wart, even a skin cancer there is risks of recurrence. Additionally, it can partially go away, go away and come back, and sometimes a scar may result or a lighter area of skin. Most lesions respond to treatment.

Menu of options include:

  • Freezing: least expensive option. May ‘burn’ for 5-10 minutes, and then peel off over the next few days.
  • Cutting: surgical removal via transverse excision; no stitches. Better for lesions around the eyes.
  • Burning: after numbing, using an electrocautery. Good for multiple tiny lesions on the face.
  • Topical cream: painted on by specialist, “frosts” then over the next few days peels off.
